Removal proceedings (also known as deportation proceedings) are immigration court cases. These are very serious cases because the outcome determines whether you are allowed to stay in the United States. Unlike defendants in criminal court, respondents in immigration court cannot get a court-appointed attorney to help them. You must hire a lawyer on your own. We are in court in Hartford, Connecticut several times a month and can easily travel to court in surrounding states for our clients.
Even lawful permanent residents (people who have green cards) can be removed from the United States. One of the most common ways for a lawful permanent resident to lose his or her green card is criminal activity. We can help criminal defendants and their attorneys evaluate plea deals and possible sentences to determine whether the conviction and/or the sentence will be harmful to the defendant’s immigration status in the United States and his or her ability to stay in the country.
